Obituary: RIP the Daily Show

Arguably America’s most famous political satirist, Jon Stewart, is leaving his Comedy Central show, “The Daily Show” later this year. This most disastrous announcement came on Feb. 10 during his show.

This announcement comes only three months after fellow political satirist and protege Stephen Colbert of “The Colbert Report” ended his show after 10 successful seasons.

Stewart has no real clue of what he will do after he leaves “The Daily Show.”

“I don’t really know what I am going to do… I have a lot of ideas floating in my head,” said Stewart

Stewart recently wrote and directed a drama titled “Rosewater,” which is a true story about Canadian-Iranian journalist who was tortured and imprisoned for 118 days in Iran because of a satirical piece he did on television about the upcoming Iranian presidential elections in 2009.

This new void that Jon Stewart created at Comedy Central was dire, and a new host for the show was quickly chosen.

The new host for “The Daily Show,” South-African born Trevor Noah, 31, was chosen just a few weeks ago. Many fear that he will not be able to fill the very big shoes of Jon Stewart, since he has had only 3 appearances on the show as a correspondent.

Even if the “Daily Show” flops after Stewart leaves, John Oliver’s “Last Week Tonight” is a breath of fresh air for the political satire genre of television. Instead of a daily news take as on “The Daily Show,” “Last Week Tonight” films once a week on Sunday at 11 pm, allowing for more research and a better understanding of what is happening around the world. Not only does Oliver film only once a week, he also has complete creative freedom and no corporate influence thanks to an agreement with HBO, the channel his show is on.

Overall, The future of “The Daily Show” is up in the air as of now. Jon Stewart is definitely signaling the end of an era in TV satire. Do not fear, however, if “The Daily Show” fails after Stewart’s departure, “Last Week Tonight” will definitely be able to pick up the pieces and perhaps be even better than “The Daily Show” ever was.
