York just got a whole lot greener on Saturday, Aug. 8 thanks to Garden Club and their sponsors. By receiving grants from PT Holdings, Whole Foods, and other various organizations, Garden Club was able to gather enough resources – with over 200 volunteers – to hold a productive event tasked with embellishing York’s courtyards.

“This work is going to have a great impact,” President of PT Holdings, Steve Snower said.

The embellishing of York will indeed have a great impact. English Teacher and Garden Club Adviser Andrew Bendelow plans on improving different parts of York such as the Senior Courtyard which will also double as an outdoor classroom.

“The Senior Courtyard will still be for seniors; it will just be more beautiful with butterfly sensors, six veggie beds and leopold benches,” Bendelow said.

For the event, groups were separated into different colors based on their abilities. The groups would then disperse into different sections of the school such as the back, front, and Senior Courtyard to pull weeds, mulch, and plant.

“It was a very fulfilling thing,” Chris Reynolds, a PT Holdings volunteer, said. “You get to show up and make a lot of nothing into a whole lot of something.”

Volunteers of all ages expressed their satisfaction with helping out at the event.

“It was very rewarding being able to see people come together,” Marketing and Community Relations Specialist Abbie Corrigan said. “Normally we don’t get to see progress in action [for the organizations we donate to].”

Children who learned about butterflies described the event as “amazing.” YHS Garden Club members described the event as a helpful, educational event.

“There’s a combination of almost everything, especially Math and Art [when gardening],” Glory Jaquat,  junior, said.

However, this event wouldn’t have been possible without Garden Club reaching out to potential donors.

“If they haven’t been so active at school, we wouldn’t have noticed them [and donated],” Head of REZ Equipment Group of PT Holdings Sam Boardstarr said.
